Crop variety improvement and its effect on productivity: the by Robert E Evenson, Douglas Gollin

By Robert E Evenson, Douglas Gollin

This publication stories at the productiveness affects of varietal development study performed at a couple of foreign centres affiliated with the Consultative crew on overseas Agricultural learn. Such centres were on the leading edge of a 40-year attempt to reproduce new different types of the world's staple foodstuff plants. The contributed chapters are the most made from a research initiated and supported via the effect review and evaluate staff (now the status Panel on influence evaluate) of the CGIAR. Descriptive information and econometric types were used to judge the impression of analysis on eleven vegetation and kingdom case reports in Brazil, China and India. The contents contain an advent and technique part (3 chapters); crop reports on rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, pearl millet, barley, lentils, potato, cassava, groundnut and customary bean (Phaseolus vulgaris); case reviews in Brazil, China and India; and a collection of three synthesis papers reporting worldwide and nearby affects on creation and human welfare. The e-book should still end up of important curiosity to these operating inside plant breeding, crop technology and agricultural economics. to be had In Print

The Green Revolution of the 1970s was extended beyond its 1970s boundaries in part through the efforts of CIMMYT to extend the area of suitability for the basic high-yielding plant type. For rice, the picture is more complex. Varietal production in Asia was also higher in the 1980s and 1990s than in the 1970s. With respect to the more advanced Asian NARS, IRRI’s role shifted to that of a germplasm supplier in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, in the later 1990s, the political opening of Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, where national programmes were relatively undeveloped, put IRRI back in the position of breeding crosses for direct release.

We note first that for wheat and rice varietal production, peak rates of production were reached in the late 1980s and have been roughly constant for the past 15 years. However, rates of varietal production for both wheat and rice are considerably higher than they were in the 1970s. By the 1990s, varietal releases in maize had surpassed those in rice. E. Evenson and D. Gollin all periods. In the 1990s, modern varietal production was more than one-third higher than in the 1980s, more than double the rate in the 1970s, and four times the rate in the 1960s.

02 Crop Variety- Chap 02 16/12/02 Overview and Summary 4:04 PM Page 31 31 Varietal production and adoption is shown for Latin America, Africa and Asia in Fig. 10; in all three regions rising levels of annual varietal release are noted. Rising levels of CIP contributions dominate only in Africa. Many of the NARS contributions are selections of landraces and much of the progress in potato productivity is due to improved handling and selection of seed by farmers. The adoption of modern varieties is high in all three regions in the late 1990s.
