INTRODUCTION 17 1 Introduction Land application of treated sewage sludge (often referred to as biosolids) for soil-amendment and land-reclamation purposes has increased over the past decade as a result of the ban on ocean dumping of wastewater residuals (Ocean Disposal Ban Act of 1988) and as an alternative to other disposal options, such as landfilling or incineration.
