The plane flew 16 kilometers in 14 minutes at a speed of about 69 kilometers per hour.

Even William Tate, who had been with them for four seasons now, didn’t bother to show up. But Wilbur and Orville were out of patience and not willing to wait any longer. Including the railroad fares to and from Kitty Hawk, they had altogether spent almost 1,000 dollars of their own money. More importantly, they had invested years of their lives. And what they got in return was 12 seconds. 12 seconds! It was not a long time at all. Not enough time to do anything.
