In these circumstances it is useful to encourage the client to really think through expectations and outcomes. 5) is a valuable way to do this. What is it for? It gives the client a structure to think through their expectations of the coaching relationship and practical arrangements, and to start to think about desired outcomes. If the client does send it to you before the meeting, then it will give you some useful background information to consider and discuss.

At appropriate moments reflect back to the person what you have heard them say, eg ‘So what you are saying is …’ or ‘It sounds like you …’, ‘What I have heard is …’. Ensure you accurately reflect back content and feelings without adding any interpretation or meaning (remember, this is pure listening). When necessary, turn the reflection into a longer summary to ensure you are both on track with the conversation. You will notice that when you do this accurately the person will then be able to choose which option suits them best.
